1943 Born in Fribourg, April 5th; son of Jean Tercier, Professor of Geology at the University of Fribourg, and Gretel, née Dürst.

 1948-1953 Primary school, Fribourg

 1953-1962 Secondary and high schools: "Collège St-Michel", Fribourg.

                        Classical studies section, "Maturité type A".

 1962-1966 Law School, University of Fribourg.

                        Graduated summa cum laude.

 1966-1968 Trainee at the law firm of José Ackermann, Fribourg.

                        Admitted to the bar in 1969.

 1968-1970 Assistant to Professor Henri Deschenaux at the Faculty of Law, University of Fribourg.

                        Doctoral thesis on an issue dealing with tort law; PhD obtained in 1971.

 1970-1971 Assistant and visiting lecturer in family law at the Faculty of Law, University of Geneva.

 1971-1972 Research at the "Max-Planck-Institut für auslän­disches und internationales Privatrecht", Hamburg (FRG).

                        Grantee of "Max-Planck-Gesellschaft" and later of the Swiss National Fund for Scientific Research.

 1972-1973 Research and studies in comparative law at the University of Cambridge (UK).

 since 1973 Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Fribourg, teaching civil law, contracts and commercial law.

 1987-1989 Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Fribourg.

 since 1988 Visiting professor in construction law at the "Ecole polytechnique fédérale" in Lausanne.

 1990-1991 Sabbatical in New York (Columbia Law School) and Paris (Panthéon Assas).

 

Teaching activities

 -        Currently teaching law of obligations, contracts, torts.

 -  Previously taught introduction to law, introduction to private law, law of persons, family law, corporations, competition law.

 -        Visiting professor at the University of Paris I (spring 1990; Swiss and German law: contracts and torts; Prof. J. Ghestin and G. Viney DEA), the University of Geneva (summer 1990: comparative competition law), the University of Paris II (spring 1991: Prof. B. Audit/D. Tallon, Chr. Laroumet, M. Grimaldi et Ph. Malinvaud DEA). Also spent a semester at the Columbia Law School (New York; Professor A. Farnsworth and G. Berman) and the University of Paris IV (1999).

 -        Author of a number of books, handbooks and articles.

 -        Chairman of the Swiss Cartel Commission since 1989; member of said Commission since 1977. From 1996 to July 1998 Chairman of the Swiss Commission on Competition.

 -        Former Chairman of the Swiss Insurance Law Society (branch of the International Association for Insurance Law, "AIDA").

 -        Former Chairman of the Supervisory Authority for the Land Registry of the Canton of Fribourg.

 -        Former member of the Banking Commission of the  "Banque de l'Etat de Fribourg" of the Canton of Fribourg.

 -  Appointed by the federal authorities on several occasions as expert in charge of examining issues dealing with tort law and law of tourism. Presided over the group of experts in charge of revising the section of the Swiss Civil Code on the protection of individual rights.

 -        Regularly called upon to act as advisor or arbitrator in matters at national and international levels.
